Why do I home school my children?

I home school because I want my children to have a good education. I want them to love learning, and to continue to want to better themselves all of their lives. I don’t believe that today’s public school systems can handle this job.

I think one of the biggest problems in today’s schools stems from the separation of God and prayer from the school. We were meant to teach our children about God and his laws, and how to incorporate what we learned into our lives.

Think about this for one moment…on our dollar bill it states: In God We Trust. But, do we not trust him in our schools? Why? Sure not everyone believes in God, but maybe they believe in a higher power, or God in a different name…perhaps Buddha, Allah, Mohammad, Hare Krishna, Jehovah. Can’t we find a way to compromise, rather than remove Him completely from the schools? Maybe if He were allowed to be present our children wouldn’t be subject to so many school shootings?

Another thing about the schools that has bothered me is that teachers are more like referees than teachers. They spend more of their time trying to settle students, get everyone calmed down, and deal with numerous interruptions throughout class time, than they actually do teaching.

There is so little learning taking place in school that kids have more and more homework each year. They have to dumb down each grade-level curriculum, and even the SATs to make it look like the educational system is not failing its students.

Another reason I home school is because I love to see my children accomplish their goals. I get to see them learn something new everyday. I witness the “Ah, huh!” moments. I love to hear the words “Mom, I finally got it, I understand!”

I’m not saying that everyday is easy. In fact, most days are pretty rough. Why do I home school? Those moments when they finally understand makes it all worthwhile. That is why I teach my children.
