We home school year round. This gives us the freedom to take time off when we need to. We usually have regular school time Tuesday through Friday.
Mondays are major house cleaning days. The kids all have jobs and everyone must participate. I feel that this is an important part of learning how to be an adult. We also have daily pick-ups and light cleaning chores throughout the week, but this is a day for deep or major cleaning.
Tuesdays and Thursdays we do math and grammar or spelling.
Wednesdays and Fridays we do reading and writing.
Saturdays are for yard work and/or recreation. During football season (August-October) we have games every Saturday. With 3 playing in three different age groups we spend all day at the field.
This schedule works really well for us. I don’t seem to get as burned out as I used to when we tried to keep up with the public school’s calendar.
This also allows the kids to spend more time with their dad when he is home. He works offshore on a 21 and 7 schedule. He is on call for 21 days and off for 7 days. So we like to take time to spend with him and to also visit friends and family who don’t live close to home.
