Why did I choose home birth?

I had 3 of my children in the hospital and was very disappointed in the way that the nurses and doctors treated me. I’m not saying that they are not good at what they do, but most are on autopilot and don’t listen or just think that they know better than we do what is best for us.

I believe that the hospital has a purpose if you are considered high risk, but the majority of women are not considered high risk.

I think that doctors cause complications in the birth process, because they try to do things on their time rather than God’s. They allow women to schedule c-sections, they induce before induction is necessary, and they try to make every woman fit into a mold that they have designed to make their lives easier, with little regard to what is best for mama and baby.

homebirth3 After having my third child I decided I was not going back to the hospital unless it was an emergency. Before I got pregnant with my fourth son, I happened to come across a midwife in my area. I called my insurance company and found out I could use a midwife and they would cover the expenses under our benefits plan.

When I found out I was pregnant I put a call into the midwife, we set up a meeting for the next day. We discussed our ideas about birth and how we felt about them. We had pretty much the same ideas, and we got along really well. I felt that the birth of my fourth son was going to be quite a different experience than the births of my first three sons.

I liked the relationship I had with my midwife. I wasn’t at all like the relationships I had with my doctors. With my doctors it was all business, rush in check you out and then get on with the next patient. With Anne, my midwife, she took the time to find out about my family and me. We built a friendship over the months of my pregnancy. Our visits would generally last from 1 – 1 ½ hours, and most of that time was spent catching up and discussing what was happening in our lives. I trusted her with my life, literally, and the life of my child. When it came time for the birth she knew what kind of experience I was looking for and she respected my wishes. She was there just in case something went wrong, and to check on the baby and I afterwards.

homebirth2 My home birth experience was so wonderful that when I became pregnant yet again, there was no decision to be made. I was having another home birth.

My fifth child, a girl, was also born at home. I wouldn’t want it any other way. In fact, the pictures on this page are from her birth.

Now don’t get me wrong, if I am ever considered high risk then I will go to the hospital. But, for the healthy women who are looking to have a natural birth consider home birth as one of your choices. If you are too afraid to try home birth maybe consider a birthing center. Both are great options over the hospital, and offer more choices as to how you would like to birth your baby.
